How to Stop Overthinking Everything

When Your Brain Won’t Let You Rest: A Therapist’s Guide to Breaking the Overthinking Cycle

Overthinking is like being stuck in a mental loop—you replay conversations, worry about worst-case scenarios, and struggle to make even simple decisions. While it can feel productive, overthinking often leads to anxiety, exhaustion, and self-doubt.

At Wild Mountain Counselling in Penticton, we help clients identify the root of their overthinking and build tools to regain mental clarity and calm.

What Overthinking Looks Like

  • Replaying conversations and analyzing every word
  • Constantly second-guessing your choices
  • Getting stuck in “what if” scenarios
  • Procrastinating due to fear of making the wrong decision
  • Feeling mentally drained from trying to think your way into certainty

Why You Overthink (And What It’s Trying to Do for You)

Overthinking often comes from a place of fear—fear of making a mistake, fear of being judged, or fear of the unknown. It’s your brain’s attempt to feel in control. But instead of offering clarity, it creates more confusion.

5 Ways to Break the Cycle of Overthinking

  1. Name It
Acknowledge what’s happening: “This is overthinking, not productive planning.”
  2. Limit the Loop
Set a timer—give yourself 10 minutes to think it through, then move on.
  3. Use “Best, Worst, Likely” Thinking
Ask: What’s the best case? Worst case? Most likely outcome?
  4. Get Out of Your Head
Redirect your attention to a simple, grounding activity (stretching, organizing, texting a friend).
  5. Challenge Perfectionism
Remind yourself: You can make a good-enough choice, even if it’s not the “perfect” one.
