Mikaela Reay,
Practicum Student
I’m currently a practicum student at the University of Yorkville, where I’m pursuing my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology. I also hold a Bachelor of Health Sciences with a major in Addictions Counselling from the University of Lethbridge, where I had the privilege of competing as a varsity athlete on the Women’s Hockey Team.
My experience includes working as a caseworker for Big Brothers Big Sisters, focusing on youth, and coaching at the Okanagan Hockey Academy for the past three years. I am thrilled to be offering low-cost counselling services to the community of Penticton and surrounding areas. Helping people navigate their journey toward positive change is my passion. I aim to select approaches that best suit each individual’s needs, especially for retired athletes transitioning from sports, as well as current athletes in their unique environments.
My approach:
My counselling approach is centered on the client. I believe that your needs and feelings should be the focus of our sessions. Through a collaborative and authentic relationship, we can establish and achieve your counselling goals. Depending on your unique circumstances, I draw from various theoretical approaches, including Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy. Regardless of the approach we use, I prioritize building a strong therapeutic relationship, ensuring you have a safe space to share, learn, and grow together. I am passionate about helping you gain insight into your life, thought patterns, and behaviors.
Low-Cost Counselling Approach
- Initial Contact: Front desk personnel will take your information. Following this, a master’s level practicum student will reach out to schedule an intake counselling session.
- Intake Counselling Session: During the intake counselling session, the practicum student will gather information about your current life challenges and mental health concerns, discuss your counselling goals, share relevant information about themselves, and outline the counselling process while reviewing confidentiality and ethics.
- Evaluation: After the intake session, the practicum student and their supervisor will review your case to determine if they can support you in achieving your counselling goals.
- Follow-Up:
- If the practicum student and supervisor believe they can assist you and you feel comfortable with them, they will connect and help you with your booking needs.
- If they determine they cannot adequately support your needs, they will reach out and help you find another counsellor who may be a better fit.
This structured approach ensures that you receive the most appropriate and effective support for your counselling journey.
